Favorite Teas for Gut Health

Teas are one of my favorite ways to support overall health—especially gut and digestive wellness. They offer gentle, consistent nourishment and are an easy daily ritual you can weave into your routine. Many herbs used in tea have been used traditionally to support digestion, gut comfort, immune balance, and the body’s natural detoxification pathways.

Below are some of the teas I most often recommend in my private practice and use personally. I keep them on rotation depending on what my body needs, and you can do the same. Read on for the gut/digestive, immune, and detox-supporting properties of each.

immune tea

1. Dandelion Root

Dandelion root is an earthy, grounding herb that has been traditionally used to support digestion and liver wellness. It’s one of my go-to teas to any gut health protocol I create for clients.
Gut & Digestion: Dandelion root contains inulin, a prebiotic fiber that supports a healthy gut microbiome by feeding beneficial bacteria. Traditionally used to support healthy bile flow, which can aid digestion and fat breakdown.
Immune: Contains natural antioxidants, including chicoric acid, that help protect cells from oxidative stress.
Detox: Its bitter compounds stimulate digestive secretions that help the body process and eliminate waste. Commonly used for supporting normal liver function and gentle detox pathways.

2. Nettle

Gut & Digestion: Nettle is naturally rich in minerals—especially magnesium and calcium—which support smooth muscle function throughout the digestive tract. Its mild diuretic properties also promote digestive comfort by reducing excess bloat.
Immune: high in vitamin K, vitamin C, and plant polyphenols, all of which contribute to antioxidant activity. It has been studied for its ability to support a balanced inflammatory response, an important aspect of immune health. Also contains antihistamine properties, making it a great tea to consume during allergy season.
Detox: promotes gentle fluid movement. Its nutrient density helps replenish minerals often used in metabolic detox processes.

3. Peppermint

Peppermint is a bright, refreshing tea that brings an immediate cooling, soothing sensation. It’s a favorite after meals thanks to its comforting effect on the digestive tract. *if you suffer with severe reflux, peppermint may not be the best choice as it relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the muscle that separates the stomach and esophagus. When this valve relaxes too much, stomach acid and food can flow back up into the esophagus, causing heartburn and other reflux symptoms.
Gut & Digestion: Traditionally used to soothe gas, bloating, and digestive discomfort. Peppermint contains menthol, which has a calming effect on the smooth muscles of the GI tract and can support relief from occasional gas or bloating. It also stimulates the release of digestive enzymes.
Immune: Contains aromatic compounds with antioxidant properties.
Detox: By supporting smoother digestion and intestinal motility, peppermint may help the body naturally clear waste more efficiently. Its cooling nature can also ease digestive tension that sometimes slows detox processes.

4. Milk Thistle

Milk thistle is an herb known for its long-standing use in traditional wellness practices for liver support. Its mild, nutty flavor pairs beautifully with other roots and herbs. Another one I almost always use in my protocols.
Gut & Digestion: Milk thistle contains silymarin, a flavonoid complex known for supporting liver cells—the organs most involved in digestion and metabolic processing. It also supports the production of bile, which plays a crucial role in digesting fats.
Immune: Silymarin is well studied for its antioxidant capacity, which helps protect cells from oxidative stress. These antioxidant properties can support overall immune resilience.
Detox: Milk thistle is one of the most researched herbs for supporting the liver’s natural detoxification pathways. It helps maintain normal liver cell function, which is essential for filtering toxins.

5. Green Tea

Gut & Digestion: Green tea is rich in catechins—especially EGCG—which have been studied for supporting a healthy gut microbiome. Can help encourage growth of commensal beneficial bacteria and inhibiting pathogenic bacteria, especially H. Pylori.
Immune: EGCG and other catechins provide robust antioxidant support that helps defend cells from free-radical damage. Green tea also contains L-theanine, which encourages a calm but alert state, supporting the gut–immune connection.
Detox: Promotes healthy metabolism, which is a key component of the body’s natural detox processes. Its catechins support liver function and enzymatic pathways involved in detoxification.

6. Red Raspberry Leaf

Red raspberry leaf is a mineral-rich herb commonly used in traditional wellness practices and appreciated for its smooth, mellow flavor. It’s a great tea for nourishment, digestive comfort and hormone balance (reducing menstrual cramps, tones uterine muscles, etc.)
Gut & Digestion: Raspberry leaf is rich in iron, magnesium, and tannins, which help tone and support the digestive system. It may also encourage smoother digestion due to its mild astringent properties.
Immune: The leaf contains antioxidants like quercetin and ellagic acid, which help support healthy immune signaling. Its nutrient density also helps replenish minerals important for immune balance.
Detox: Supports the body’s natural elimination pathways by providing minerals needed in metabolic detox reactions. Its mild diuretic qualities can support fluid balance and gentle cleansing.

7. Hibiscus

Hibiscus tea is vibrant, tart, and deeply refreshing, making it a lovely option to drink both hot and iced. Its ruby-red color hints at its rich antioxidant content.
Gut & Digestion: Hibiscus’s natural acidity may help stimulate digestive enzymes and support comfortable digestion. Its fiber content also supports regular bowel movements and gut motility.
Immune: High in vitamin C and anthocyanins, both known for strong antioxidant activity. These compounds support immune resilience by countering oxidative stress.
Detox: Supports hydration and the body’s natural ability to process and eliminate waste.

8. Tulsi (Holy Basil)

Tulsi is an adaptogenic herb loved for its calming yet uplifting qualities. It’s an excellent choice when stress impacts digestion or overall wellbeing.
Gut & Digestion: Tulsi has adaptogenic properties that help support the gut when digestion is affected by stress. It also contains eugenol, which can have calming effects on the digestive tract.
Immune: Rich in antioxidants such as rosmarinic and ursolic acid, which help support immune balance. It also supports the body’s stress response, which directly influences immune function.
Detox: Promotes liver enzyme activity involved in cleansing. Its adaptogenic effects encourage overall metabolic balance, which supports detox processes.

9. Chamomile

Chamomile is a gentle, soothing herb known for its calming aroma and digestive comfort. It’s perfect for winding down or supporting the gut during stressful moments.
Gut & Digestion: Often used to soothe the digestive tract and ease occasional discomfort.
Immune: Antioxidant flavonoids help support healthy immune signaling. Its calming effect on the nervous system also benefits the gut–immune connection.
Detox: By supporting relaxation and better sleep, chamomile indirectly supports the body’s natural detox cycles, which are most active at night. It also encourages smoother digestion, aiding daily elimination.

10. Valerian Root

Valerian root is a grounding, earthy herb traditionally used for its calming effects on the nervous system. It’s a great option when tension or stress interferes with digestion.
Gut & Digestion: Helpful when digestion is impacted by stress or nervous system tension.
Immune: Its calming influence on the body helps balance the immune system via nervous-system regulation.
Detox: Deeper, more restorative sleep—often supported by valerian—enhances natural detoxification and repair processes. It also supports the parasympathetic “rest and digest” state needed for optimal elimination.
