What Are Castor Oil Packs

One of the first lifestyle practices I often recommend to clients is incorporating castor oil packs into their weekly routine. They are inexpensive, simple to do at home, and offer a wide range of health benefits. Castor oil has long been revered as a highly effective home remedy for supporting healthy liver function, detoxing the gastrointestinal tract, healing the skin, and calming the emotions. It is also helpful for sleep, which makes a castor oil pack a good nighttime self-care technique. If you struggle with insomnia as well, this technique could nicely help you get deeper, quality sleep.

Castor oil packs can increase lymphatic drainage, support your body’s natural ability to detox, decrease inflammation and improve digestion. Warmed castor oil packs can be used in a variety of places on the body for healing. My favorite is over the liver, but you can also place them on breast cysts, stomach/abdomen area and even your thyroid. The warm packs help stimulate the lymphatic and circulatory systems.

A little side note…the lymphatic system is responsible for collecting and cleaning up toxins, infections, heavy metals, dead cells and more. When your lymph is congested, this paves the path for disease and inflammation and people feel puffy, fatigued or generally “stuck”. Unlike your circulatory system, your lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump. Instead, it relies on movement, deep breathing, muscle contractions, hydration, and healthy circulation to keep lymph fluid moving throughout the body.

While castor oil packs aren’t a magic cure, they can be a simple tool to support healthy lymphatic movement and circulation when combined with other foundational habits like adequate hydration, regular movement, nourishing foods, and healthy bowel movements.

This is one of the reasons I frequently recommend castor oil packs as part of a root-cause gut healing protocol. They complement the body’s natural healing processes and encourage the rest-and-digest state that is so important for optimal digestion and overall wellness.

What is Castor Oil

Castor oil, also known as Palma Christi, is derived from the bean of the plant Ricinus communis, a member of the Euphorbiaceae family, through cold mechanical pressing. Ricinus communis is native to India, and approximately 90% of the oil is produced in Brazil and India. The cold-press process yields approximately 33% medicinal-quality oil, which is further refined to rid the oil of ricin, a toxic substance. Castor oil is composed chiefly of ricinoleic acid, which represents approximately 80% to 90% of the total fatty acids; other fatty acids include oleic acid and linoleic acid.

Who May Benefit from Castor Oil Packs

Castor oil packs may be a supportive addition to your wellness routine if you experience:

  • Constipation or sluggish bowel movements
  • Bloating or digestive discomfort
  • Mild lymphatic congestion or puffiness
  • Sluggish liver or gallbladder
  • Chronic stress or feeling “stuck” in fight-or-flight mode
  • Difficulty winding down before bed
  • A desire to support your body’s natural detoxification pathways

Materials needed
Directions
  1. Cut fabric to desired size (ex: liver, thyroid, abdomen) and place in container.
  2. Pour a generous amount of castor oil over fabric. You want the fabric to be thoroughly soaked.
  3. Lay a towel under you. Castor oil can stain so remove any clothing, etc.
  4. Place saturated castor oil fabric over desired location.
  5. Place an old towel over that fabric.
  6. Add heating pad and relax for 45-60 minutes.
  7. When finished, wipe off any excess oil, place castor oil fabric in jar, add fresh oil to it to keep it moist. You can use the same fabric for 3 months.
Additional Notes
  • You can buy pre-made castor oil packs, like this one or this one.
  • Use this time to relax, sip on some tea, read a book, do a crossword, catch up on your favorite show, etc
  • While heat is not required, I find it is more effective when used plus it is very calming and relaxing-helping with sleep.
  • If you use a pre-made pack, you can wear it overnight if desired.
  • Many people benefit from using a castor oil pack 3–5 evenings per week, especially as part of a calming bedtime routine. Consistency is often more important than duration. Even one hour a few times per week can become a restorative ritual that supports both the body and nervous system.
When to Avoid Using Them:

Castor oil packs are generally considered safe for many individuals, but they are not appropriate for everyone.

Avoid placing castor oil packs over the abdomen:

  • During pregnancy unless specifically directed by your healthcare provider
  • During menstruation if they increase cramping or discomfort
  • Over open wounds, rashes, or irritated skin
  • Immediately after abdominal surgery without medical clearance

If you have a medical condition or are unsure whether castor oil packs are appropriate for you, consult your healthcare provider before use.
